Year 6 in Term 4

Year 6 at CanberraWhat a busy year it has been so far. At the end of last Term, we enjoyed our excursion to Canberra. Apart from the rain and the freezing cold, everybody had a fantastic time. Our time at Parliament House, The High Court and The Electoral Commission in particular, extended our knowledge from our “Government” unit at school. We also better understand the election and voting process.

Year 6 in Term 3

Welcome to Term Three. Last Term we enjoyed learning about Antarctica and its importance in our global environment. We also participated in "ice melting" experiments in the Science rooms at Inverell High School.

This looks like being another busy Term as we will be participating in drug and alcohol education. We are also very proud of our sporting representatives, with both our Rugby League and Netball teams participating in the Regional Final of their respective tournaments. We also look forward to visiting Inverell High School later in the Term to engage in further practical science lesons.

Our Peer Reading Program is continuing successfully with 6G visiting 2D, 6O visiting 2P, 6S visiting 1J and 5/6L visiting 2B. In these visits, the Year 6 students are developing mentor and leadership skills as they assist the younger students in developing valuable reading skills. Everybody involved is really enjoying these sessions.

The highlight for many of our students this term will be our Canberra excursion in week ten which ties in with our studies on Government this Term.

Antarctica Day

Antarctica Day was highly anticipated by Year 6 students - and after weeks of planning, the big day finally arrived. Everybody knew there would be fun, excitement, experiments....and cold. But when they walked into the classrooms on that cold, cold day....they found the fans were on flat out and the windows were wide open (until the rain began to blow in). Those who dressed prepared for the Antarctic winter in their thermals, beanies and gloves fared the best.

The students participated in activities such as thermometer making, igloo and insulation experiments, cool Antarctic Website activities plus many more, including watching a video that showed the students the harsh climate in Antarctica and what is required to survive the bitterly cold climate.

Everybody had a fantastic day, but what a relief it was to put the heaters back on after lunch !!!

Grip Leadership Conference

On Wednesday the 8/5/2013, 28 Year Six students attended a Grip Leadership conference in Moree. We had to leave at 7:10 in the morning; we then drove on the bus for an hour and a half. While there we learnt how to improve as a leader. First of all they told us that good leaders should always work together and think differently. Then we had a loud noises session which we would have all through the day. Loud noises sessions were where we played games involving loud noises and leadership skills.

Inverell Transport Museum - Year 4

On Tuesday this week Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to the Inverell Transport Museum. We had lots of fun looking at how cars, motorbikes and bicycles have changed over time. One of the best parts was going onto the double decker bus, as well as sitting on the motorbike.

We would like to thank Kevin and Tania who showed us around the museum!
